One of the most famous and most photographed Paris attractions is the Eiffel Tower, which is located in the center of Paris. The Eiffel tower was designed by Gustave Eiffel for the 1889 World's Fair, which was hosted in Paris that year. When the Eiffel tower was first built, many people considered it an eyesore. In contrast, it is now thought to be one of the world's most beautiful works of architecture. The original permit for the Eiffel tower allowed it to remain standing for only twenty years. However, it was allowed to remain after the permit expired because it was believed to be important for communication. The Eiffel tower is 986 feet (300 meters) tall, excluding the TV antenna on top. The antenna itself is 66 feet (20 meters) tall. Every seven years, the tower receives a coat of dark brown paint. Flashing lights, as well as several high powered search lights, were installed on the Eiffel Tower in 2000. Since that time, visitors to the Eiffel Tower have been able to see a light show every night. Opening hours for a visit to the top of the Eiffel Tower extend from 09:30 AM t0 11:00 PM.
